Today Playing for the Planet’s Green Game Jam (GGJ) announces the full list of awards for participating studios, as well as the judging criteria behind them.
Now in its 5th year, the GGJ celebrates the work of its developers through a final awards ceremony. Developers are challenged to build and incorporate ‘green activations’ into their games to engage players on a particular environmental theme, and these will be the focus for this leg of the awards.
“Green activations” can be anything ranging from time limited events, to new levels, to marketing campaigns on social media or at physical events, provided they meet this year’s theme: small actions, big impact. Find out more about this year’s GGJ theme here.
As activations are part of live games which are not all free to play and might require basic progress like tutorial completion to access the green activation, we are working with submission documents to evaluate activations. Each of the participants is encouraged to share as much as possible on their activation related to the user journey, outcomes, and hopes for behavioral change through this deck.
Alongside the criteria, Playing for the Planet have released a template activation deck to guide participants in their submissions.
Those wishing to submit for these awards must use this template, and be a registered participant in the GGJ 2024. Winners of all awards will receive an engraved trophy made from 100% recycled materials by Better Future Factory to display their contribution to the project of green gaming in their office.
However, in previous years, we’ve seen there are many studios who also implement green activations or build environmental themes into their games but are unable to meet the timelines of the GGJ. We are working on a different set of awards to showcase all of the good work happening outside of the GGJ which will be open to everyone in the games industry. More information on this section of the awards and how to apply will be announced at the end of July.
The award categories for the Green Game Jam this year will be as follows:
