The Playing for the Planet Alliance is excited to announce an expansion of our annual Green Game Jam initiative, as we partner with Playgama.com and GameDistribution by Azerion to launch the inaugural Green Web Game Jam 2025. This collaboration marks a significant milestone in our mission to harness the power of games for environmental action, bringing our impact directly into the rapidly growing web gaming ecosystem.
For the first time in the Green Game Jam's six-year history, we're extending our reach into the HTML5 gaming space, tapping into a vibrant community of web developers and the over 500 million players who engage with browser games worldwide. This partnership with Playgama, a leading web game distribution and monetization platform, and GameDistribution, one of the largest B2B game distribution networks, represents our commitment to meeting developers and players where they are.
"We are excited to see Playgama taking their own spin on the Green Game Jam this year and look forward to seeing how the vast and diverse Playgama development community brings a range of approaches to this jam," says Louisa Keight, Project Lead of the Green Game Jam at Playing for the Planet. "We look forward to the innovative ideas that will come out of the first Playgama Green Web Game Jam."
Running from July 4-15, 2025, the Green Web Game Jam invites HTML5 developers of all skill levels to create compelling games that tackle pressing ecological challenges—from pollution and deforestation to overconsumption and climate change. What sets this initiative apart is its focus on embedding environmental themes directly into gameplay mechanics, not just storytelling, to inspire real-world behavioral change.
The jam builds on the proven success of our annual Green Game Jam, which has reached over 100 million users, raised $1.5 million for environmental causes, and supported concrete actions like reforestation, pollution cleanup, and climate education through innovative game design. The winning games created during this jam will be later monetized and both Playgama and GameDistribution will give up their commission until the end of 2025, directing it instead to On the Edge, our chosen 2025 conservation partner.
Browser games represent one of the most environmentally sustainable forms of gaming, requiring no downloads, consuming minimal energy, and extending device lifespans. By partnering with platforms that prioritize accessibility and sustainability, we're demonstrating how the gaming industry can reduce its environmental footprint while amplifying its positive impact.
"Browser games consume minimal energy and extend device lifespans, making them one of the most sustainable ways to play," notes Dmitry Kachmar, founder of Playgama. "We are very proud to lead this initiative alongside partners to raise attention to the way we live on our planet and make significant contributions to the environment."
The three winning games will receive unprecedented exposure through GameDistribution's network of over 2,000 partner platforms and prominent featuring on Playgama's homepage, reaching millions of players worldwide. Our judging panel, comprising representatives from Playing for the Planet, Playgama, and GameDistribution, will evaluate entries not just on creativity and polish, but on how effectively they integrate environmental themes into core gameplay experiences.
"With over a decade in the games industry, I've seen the impact games can have when purpose meets scale," says Yuliya Nabieva, VP Gaming at Azerion. "The Green Web Game Jam is a unique opportunity to engage the fast-growing web developer ecosystem in creating meaningful, playable experiences."
This partnership represents more than just a game jam—it's a testament to the gaming industry's potential to drive meaningful environmental change. By expanding into web gaming, we're opening new pathways for developers to contribute to global sustainability efforts while reaching audiences that may never have encountered environmental messaging through traditional channels.
