The Playing for the Planet Alliance, an initiative facilitated by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), marks the culmination of five months of hard work from the 57 studios participating in its annual Green Game Jam with the project’s official Go-Live date.
With record participation this year across 27 countries, games studios will launch themed, exclusive in-game content and campaigns to fundraise for conservation initiatives and start a conversation about why nature matters in an effort to show support for its protection.
The Green Game Jam annually reaches an average of 100 million daily active users and has led to 1.5 million trees planted and $1.5 million raised since its inception in 2020. It brings together TiMi Studio Group, Ubisoft, Supercell, Rovio and others who have pledged to integrate the theme of nature into their titles.
This year includes a dedicated landing page where players will be polled about the reasons they care about nature and want it to be protected, with the option to leave a personalised message of support. This data will be shared with policymakers who have an affinity with both nature and games, calling to protect 30% of the planet by 2030 and addressing the fact that 1 million of the planet’s estimated 8 million species is threatened with extinction.
In addition to that, the 2025 Green Game Jam will also give participating studios and their players the chance to fund nature-related causes by teaming up with On the Edge, Dots.eco and/or Planet Play.
NATURE IS IN DANGER NOW
From the air we breathe to the food we eat, the natural world is the foundation of life on Earth. To put it in monetary terms, the estimated value of services nature provides annually is a whopping $125 trillion. That includes everything from the 75% of crops that rely on the survival of pollinators; to the 2.6 billion tonnes of CO2 removed from the atmosphere by forests alone; to the 200 million people around the world that depend on coral reefs for flooding defenses.
But this foundation is showing cracks. Nature is humanity’s most valuable ally - and it’s at risk. We’re using the equivalent of 1.6 Earths to maintain our current way of life, and ecosystems cannot keep up with our demands. By 2030, people are set to place even more resource demands on the planet, which is likely to further deteriorate the health of natural ecosystems on Earth.
But it doesn’t have to be this way. We know that with co-ordinated, international efforts, we can reverse the impact of human activity on the natural world. And that starts with the widespread engagement of individuals on the plight of nature, a reminder to world leaders that individuals want to see the needle move on this topic, and fundraising for conservation efforts across the world.
“We have invited and encouraged these developers to use their games to inspire high-impact, measurable change. A lot of companies talk about sustainability, climate, and the environment, but these are the ones who actually stepped up to the plate and they deserve recognition and our support,” said Sam Barratt, Chief of Youth, Education and Advocacy at UNEP. “The rest of the industry is invited to follow along as these exciting in-game events commence today at playing4theplanet.org/green-game-jam-2025.”
